Single woman. Double life.

This well-paced spaghetti western from director Giorgio Ferroni deals with Southern Major Sanders (Jacques Sernas), who continues fighting the North after the conclusion of the Civil War. Former Rebel, Gary Diamond (Giuliano Gemma), now a guide, leads a pair of Union soldiers to stop Sanders before he can pull off a raid on Fort Yuma. Little does Diamond know that one of the Union officers is actually Sanders' spy. More complications ensue, pairing Diamond with saloon-girl Connie Breastfull (Sophie Daumier) before Sanders' plot is foiled. A rousing melodrama with a labyrinthine storyline Ferroni's film remains entertaining throughout, aided by a fine score by Ennio Morricone and Gianni Ferrio.

Shot for most part in the woody surroundings of Manziana, some thirty kilometers ouside the boundaries of Rome, this is a remarkably green spaghetti western. Gianni Ferrio's score is lovely, the whistled motto, played over the nice Rotoscope title sequence, a standout. Un dollaro bucato was an important movie for the Italian film industry; its success convinced producers that Italian westerns could be made without expensive American B-actors; furthermore the Ulysses formula of the war veteran returning home, would prove to be one of the most enduring formulas of the genre: some of the best latter day spaghetti westerns, like California and Keoma were cast in that mould. Reportedly it was one of the favourite films of famous Italian writer Alberto Moravia.

James Clayton is one of the top prospects in the new crop of CIA recruits. His intelligence and unconventional attitude attract the attention of veteran Walter Burke who squires him through the Agency's difficult training courses and helps him to quickly rise through the ranks. Clayton is then given a special assignment, to root out a suspected mole that has infiltrated the Agency.
